We are glad to have you here. This article is extremely needed. It seems so, at least to me. At 14 years old, I began wearing Maybelline cosmetics buying guide. It was not the right shade for me. This is it! So, I’m trying to be a voice for all beautiful brown-skinned black women who have the same struggle finding make-up as me. Let me tell you a bit about me.

First, black is beautiful. The darker the berry, the sweeter it will be! At 14 years old, I was not even aware that I was a blackberry. It was lipstick when I started to wear make-up. My mom started it as a Fashion Fair. My mother is light-skinned, and my daughter is dark-skinned. Needless to state, her lipstick was not matching. A former boyfriend even called me a Ronald McDonald with dark skin!

It is harder for brown-skinned or dark-skinned ladies to find affordable make-up in drugstores. Cosmo, Glamour, and all the rest will always talk about great spring make-up. But, hello, did you forget that black girls also like spring make-up? So, I feel your pain. I’m a self-proclaimed make-up fanatic and would love to share my experiences and recommend products that are both good and bad. Let’s get to it!

JUST A FYI: I’ve tried these make-ups many times and have now shared my experience.

FACE: It is hard to find good foundation and affordable full-coverage makeup. Here are some amazing finds.

1-Cover Girl Queen Collection Natural Hue Liquid Foundation – Spicy Brown

PROS: It matches skin tones with yellow or red undertones. It costs between 6-8 dollars and can be found in most grocery and drug stores.

CONS: This will not provide you with the coverage that you require if you have dark spots or blemishes. Not even close, okay? You will need to apply it again and again as the product wears quickly. It is upside-down with a small spout so you can’t pour too much. In these times of economic crisis, every bit counts, ladies! It’s all good!

This collection might not suit you if your skin is unevenly colored (e.g., you have both yellow and red undertones or blue and red undertones). There are other shades that work well for dark-skinned women and men. Rich Mink, Sheer Coffee, and True Ebony.

2- Cover Girl Queen Collection Natural Hue Compact Foundation

PROS-It gives you greater coverage than the Liquid Foundation. That’s all. This is all I can think.

CONS: It rubs off very quickly. I also found it difficult to match my skin tone because it is tinted differently from the liquid foundation. It also wiped right off my skin when it was hot outside, revealing every blemish. It also wipes off your clothes and stains your hands. It’s reasonably priced so it’s great for casual occasions, such as a date night or going to a cool place. However, I wouldn’t recommend it for hot or humid places like a carnival or club. You can also get it in the same color.

3-Black Opal True Color Foundation – Black Walnut

PROS-Awesome coverage. It is very generously stocked so you can use it for a long time. The bottle is a standing upright bottle with a large opening. If you spill too much it will not be difficult to pour back into the container. This allows you to SAVE, SAVE and SAVE! It lasts about two months. I use foundation daily, wash my face, and reapply when going out. It costs between 8-12 dollars depending on where you live. It is a great purchase.

CONS: If you have combination or oily skin, you should wear powder and keep it on you. You may feel greasy on your face during these hot and humid days. You should be fine if you have Blotters or powders with you. It could also be that my skin tone changes. If that is the case, don’t worry. However, I have found that the color of a new product I buy might not match the one I had before.

Black Opal Products can be harder to find than the other products I mentioned. It’s possible that they aren’t as popular or something else, but I find them almost always in CVS or Rite-Aid. Happy hunting! Carob, Suede Mocha and Ebony brown ….. are all good colors for brown-skinned girls. Hazelnut is also a great choice for those with brown skin.

4-Maybelline Pure Makeup (Shine Free Foundation with WaterO) – Cocoa – Dark 3)

PROS- Easy to find, very affordable. You can find it in most drugstores, supermarkets, and Wal-Mart. Depending on where you live, the cost of this product can range from 5.99-10 dollars. Spreads easily and provides full coverage that won’t clog pores.

CONS-Upside-down tube. This means that you need to be precise about how much you apply to your face. Too much can cause it to go to waste. There are limited colors available for darker skin tones. There are only THREE colors available for women with OUR color. Dark 1- Tan, Dark 2- Caramel and Dark 3-Cocoa are the three shades available. I have tried the Cocoa. It is too dark for me.

The Caramel Dark 2 is a little too light. If you’re tight on cash and don’t have enough money to try new things, this is the product for you. There are FIVE shades for light, FOUR for medium, and three for dark ??!!!. If you don’t match, leave this product alone. You will have to be careful not to look at the woman who is trying to take your order.

5-Black Radiance Color Perfect Oil-Free Liquid Makeup- Cocoa Bean

PROS-Very Affordable! Very! It is somewhat accessible. It costs between 5.99-10 dollars and can be found in many Beauty Supply stores. CVS also carries it. It spreads evenly and provides good coverage. You get a lot for your money. It comes in an open-spout jar so that you can return any excess. Gives you a nice matte finish.

CONS- Cocoa Bean does NOT match my skin tone! However, I have some strange undertones that can affect my skin so it may be difficult to match. It’s amazing how the make-up dries differently when it’s applied. It has this weird applicator thingy. I’m not sure what it is, but it got in the way of my work. It claims it’s safe for all skin types. However, I have sensitive skin and found it to be too drying on my skin. I had to wash it off after thirty minutes. Brownie or Mocha Honey are also options.

6- L’Oreal True match Super Blendable Makeup- Nut Brown

PROS-Oh my god, this make-up was amazing! It spreads really, really well! It matches well with a yellow undertone. A brown-skinned girl will look amazing. Your skin will breathe easily because it is light. Coverage is good for girls with blemishes. It’s easy to find and 7 out of 10 times they have all the colors for brown-skinned girls. They are available at Wal-Mart and Walgreens. That’s it.

CONS: This product contains SPF. I have severe sunburns so it made me very sick. It’s not easy to find. It is a bit more expensive than some of the other products. MMM, it’s about 10.99 or more. It may be available on sale. You won’t get much out of the bottle so you should use it sparingly. You can also try …. Soft Sable or Cocoa.

7- Revlon Colorstay Make-up with Soft Flex – Mahogany

PROS- Easily found in most pharmacies. These colors are great for brunette girls. It’s quite affordable. This product is a little more expensive, but it costs between 9.99 and 12.99. It is OK… Not the best but it is good if you want light to moderate coverage.

CONS- Mahogany didn’t match my undertones very well. I’m familiar with …. again with the undertones. It dried, and my skin looked a little grayish-chalky. For darker skin tones, there isn’t a lot of choice. It has SPF6, which is bad for me but great for everyone else. If you don’t have an undertone problem …. You can also try Cappuccino or Mocha.

Last but not least…

8- Maybelline Dream Liquid Mousse – Cocoa (Dark 3)

PROS- I LOVE THIS PRODUCT! This is my current make-up! It does exactly what it says in the commercial. It covers all your pores and gives you a beautiful finish. Maximum coverage! You don’t need concealer. It’s very affordable at around 7-10 dollars. It was found at Kroger’s grocery store. It comes with a handy little nozzle that sprays out, and it’s very convenient. It has a whipped feel, which I apply with my fingertips.

It glides on easily and covers all my dark spots and pores. It also has a top that can be removed so that I don’t over-squirt and can just put it back in the bottle. The bottle has a lot of product, so you don’t need to use much. This bottle was purchased about a month ago, and I still have about half of it. It is amazing! It’s great! I hope this is the end for me. But it usually isn’t.

CONS-Once again, this is Maybelline. They don’t cater for the brownies so there are only three colors of this color. I really like Dark 3 of this particular makeup. It’s strange that Dark 3 of the Maybelline products didn’t work for me, but it is possible. This is the only negative I can think of for this product.

I’m sure that many people are asking me what about MAC. MAC, first of all, is not something I would consider easy or accessible. MAC can be found in a dept shop counter or in a MAC store in a mall. Both close at 9 pm. I’m a girl with a tight budget and can’t afford to spend 15-25 dollars on make-up that doesn’t last long. MAC causes me a rash because of my sensitive skin. The Studio Tech Compact NW50 was my first choice. You don’t have to pay a lot more if you are willing to spend a bit more. Here are some shades: NW45, NC47, NC50 and NC55.
